Budgeting your
money
Jul 30, 2004
Most people realize that it’s a good idea to have a safety
margin of money set aside for unforeseen circumstances, but
making that happen can be difficult.
You may feel that you do not have a great deal of choice about
what to do with your money, as you are forced to pay a monthly
rent or mortgage payment, buy food shopping regularly, and maybe
pay for child care. It can be difficult to make the money stretch
to put something away for the future while paying these everyday
expenses, this is where having a spending plan can help.
A spending plan is in effect a budget for your monthly spending
and it helps you keep track of your spending so you can reach
your goals of accruing savings. Many people see a budget as
a restrictive thing, they think that having one in place will
prevent them from living their lives enjoyably, and that they
are hard to set up and keep track of.
The truth is that a budget can help you to gain the financial
freedom that you are after by helping you to meet your goals
and control your money more effectively. With a spending plan,
you'll be able to track the money coming in, where the money
goes, and plug any "spending leaks" you find. You’ll
also be able to set up some savings goals that you can reach,
to give yourself that financial buffer that can be essential
at times.
After a short time your spending plan will help you to save
money regularly – money that will help you when unexpected
emergencies arise, and it will help you reach the goals you've
set for yourself and your family.
